Widespread Panic's Weekend at Red Rocks

Red Rocks is so excited to welcome the Widespread Panic crew back to the stage for their annual Red Rocks Rager, happening this year from June 27th to June 29th. The group will be returning to big stages and venues for the first time since last July when guitarist Jimmy Herring was diagnosed with tonsil cancer last summer. We can’t wait for them to return, and to show all the love as they take on their favorite venue in Colorado once again. And, if all goes well, the group will mark their 75th sold out show at The Rocks by the end of the weekend!

Widespread Panic is the legendary blues rock band that formed in their college dorm in Athens, Georgia back in 1981. Started by lead singer John Bell and late guitarist Michael Houser, the group got their name as a reference and sly joke to Houser’s frequent panic attacks at the time. The group formed and became underground legends for playing college bars and frat parties, and for their $1 Monday Night shows at Uptown Lounge in the city. A record deal followed just six years after their formation, and after a few good reviews and one Space Wranglers debut EP later - the group was on their way to becoming legends of jazz rock and soul. 

It’s clear that all the hard work they did in the underground paid off. The group became iconic for their live shows, and known worldwide for never playing their songs the same way twice. At the beginning of each tour, the group would write a master list of all of their songs. They cross them off as they go from stop to stop, marking each in different colors based on when they played the song and where. They decide the night of the concert what they will play - sometimes even deciding during their set breaks and backstage with screaming fans right on the other side of the wall. Though non-conventional, the crowds absolutely love it - so it's no wonder they’ve sold out shows around the world for decades. And with literally 20 years of playing at Red Rocks in the books already - who knows what will happen?! We surely don’t…but we are making sure we’re there for every moment of it.
