William Lee Apostol, popularly known as Billy Strings, is a Grammy-winning guitarist and bluegrass artist. As represented by his "Strings" stage name, he is a master of string instruments, including guitar, banjo, and mandolin. His music is notable for bluegrass, rock, jazz, and psychedelia influences.
Billy was born in the town of West Simsbury, Connecticut, in 1992. He started playing bluegrass instruments at a young age, influenced by his stepfather, who was a bluegrass musician. He started playing with a metal band in middle school but soon left. When he graduated from high school, he started his career as a bluegrass musician.
His career started to soar when he was discovered by mandolinist Don Julin in an open mic. They began playing together in 2012 and lasted for four years. This change led to him gaining a broader opportunity to reach bluegrass stardom. By 2017, Billy made Rolling Stone's list of the Top Ten New Country Artists to Watch. In the same year, he released "Turmoil and Tinfoil," his debut album. He released his second album, "Home," in 2019. "Home" was significant to his career since this album resulted in him winning his first Grammy for Best Bluegrass Album in 2021. In 2021, he released his third album, "Renewal," with songs that reached multiple charts. This was followed by his most recent album, "Me/And/Dad," a collaboration with his stepfather Terry Barber.
