Celebrating twenty years of their iconic debut album “SILENT ALARM,” English rock band BLOC PARTY is hosting endless nights of rock-out fun on the road, marking 20 years of turning up the indie rock scene. Released back in 2005, the record quickly gained attention — new fans tuning in, and receiving positive reviews from critics in the U.S. With sold-out tours that came their way, everyone became crazy for Bloc Party. Hailed for its fast tempo and passionate delivery, it’s a record where the band shines at their very best. Borne out of “a nagging youthful urgency,” as Okereke described, it’s an album that examines the everyday mundane, finding amusement and pleasure between the lines. “Those are the sort of things that can be incredibly touching.”
The album was awarded “Indie Album of the Year” at the 2006 PLUG Awards, the NME Album of the Year, and “Banquet” made it to the 13th spot on NME’s 'Top 50 Singles of 2005'. This marked a great start to the band’s momentum, wherein they subsequently released even more bangers in their next records.
Formed in 1999 by Kele Okereke & Russell Lissack, the band found itself in the limelight when their demo of “She's Hearing Voices” made it to the hands of BBC Radio 1 DJ Steve Lamacq and the acclaimed Alex Kapranos of Franz Ferdinand. MAking rounds in magazines, newspapers, and a memorable BBC Radio 1 performance, Bloc Party hit a home run. With multiple labels reaching out, the band decided to stay independent and sign a deal where they own full control of their music.
Described as indie rock, post-punk revival, alt-rock, dance-rock, art punk, post-Britpop, and so on, the band’s diversified elements are key to their unique place in the indie-rock sphere. They aren’t constrained to a single label — it’s purely hard-hitting music that rocks the soul.
Joining Bloc Party on this trek are the Canadian rockers over at METRIC. On the road, they’ll be celebrating their fourth studio album “Fantasies.” Playing the record in full, it’s a throwback set brimming with nostalgic 2000s feels. Of course, they’re also whipping out some of their greatest hits. In case you didn’t know, this album was shortlisted at the 2009 Polaris Music Prize for “Canadian Album of the Year” and won a Juno Award for “Alternative Album of the Year.”
Ranked #41 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 50 Greatest Canadian Artists of All Time, these fellas are legends in their own game. A true gem in indie music, it’s hard to resist their rocking groove.
