Erykah Badu is known for her eccentric music style that contains elements of hip-hop, jazz, soul, and R&B. The four-time Grammy Award-winning singer and songwriter has been given a couple of titles by critics, such as the “Queen of Neo-Soul” or “First Lady of Neo-Soul.” Indeed, Badu’s signature style is a unique concoction of different musical elements no other artist can replicate.
Badu first made waves in the music world when she released her critically-acclaimed debut album Baduizm in 1997. The record debuted at number 2 on the Billboard 200 chart and number 1 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. Baduizm was certified platinum three times by the Recording Industry Association of America. Moreover, Baduizm won Best R&B Album at the 40th Grammy Awards, while the lead single from the album, “On and On,” also won a Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance.
Since the release of Baduizm, Badu was able to drop four more studio albums from 2000 to 2010, all of which debuted in the top 5 of the US Billboard 200 and Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums charts. In 2000, Badu won another Grammy Award, and this time it was for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group for the song “You Got Me” with the Roots and Eve. Three years later, Badu would once again bring home the golden gramophone when she won Best R&B Song for “Love of My Life (An Ode to Hip-Hop).”
