With five movies in the roster, Denver Film and Denver Arts & Venues proudly announces the return of FILM ON THE ROCKS. This year's action-packed lineup of films will have audiences screaming the next line, laughing out loud, and grabbing the edge of your seat. Selected films for this year's extravaganza include THE MATRIX, SHREK, THE WIZARD OF OZ, DEADPOOL, and MAD MAX: FURY ROAD. Moreover, there will be special pre-show performances right before the film starts.
Now, this Monday night will feature a movie that audiences of all ages have grown to be familiar with - an ogre whose swamp becomes taken over by fairy tale characters. Determined to get his home back, Shrek cuts a deal with Farquaad and brings Donkey along on a mission to rescue Princess Fiona. Little does he know, the Princess has a deep, dark secret.
The 2001 film has been highly regarded for its marvelous story, themes of myths, heartfelt moments, relatable characters, and its iconic soundtrack. The animated film has also built a fan culture surrounding a generation that grew up with Shrek.
A review written by Stephen Hunter in 2001 shares, "For the movie, despite all its high-tech weirdness, is really that most perdurable of human constructions, a tale told well and true, one that carries you along and prods you to laugh and squeal and jump and dance..." The review highlights how Shrek's story is able to capture our real attention.
Released in 2001, the fantasty comedy film established DreamWorks Animation as a fierce competitor to Pixar's reign in the advent of animated films. The franchise then released sequels - Shrek 2, Shrek the Third, and Shrek Forever After. The film became highly regarded as one of the most influential films of the 2000s, and one of the greatest animated films made. It was also chosen for preservation in the National Film Registry in 2020, the first animated film of the 21st century on the collection.
"The witty, fractured fairy tale Shrek has a solid base of clever writing," Los Angeles Times' Kenneth Turan said about the film. "Shrek is a world-class charmer that could even seduce the academy when it hands out the first official animation Oscar next year," Peter Travers of Rolling Stone wrote.
Now, witness SHREK's big screen comeback right at FILM ON THE ROCKS only on June 24, 2024. Book your tickets now!
