In its early days, the band performed surf rock, which was evident in their debut album, 12 Bar Bruise. The 2012 record, signed under the band’s own label, spawned incredible tracks, “Elbow” and “Bloody Ripper.” By their second album, Eyes Like the Sky, the band’s music was characterized as “psychedelic spaghetti western.” The album entered the top 10 in the Australian chart and contained narration by Broderick Smith.
In 2016, the band made its international breakthrough with its eighth studio effort, Nonagon Infinity. The album, which spawned singles “Gamma Knife,” “People-Vultures,” and “Mr. Beat,” entered the charts in the U.K., the U.S., and Belgium. Nonagon Infinity later won Best Hard/RockHeavy Metal Album at the 2016 ARIA Music Awards and Best Album at the Music Victoria Awards.
The following year, the band continued their phenomenal success with the release of Microtonal Banana. The ninth effort, which peaked at number 2, became the band’s highest charting work on the Australia chart. It also entered four Billboard charts, including Billboard 200 and the Top Rock Albums chart. The album was preceded by notable singles, “Rattlesnake,” “Sleep Drifter,” and “Nuclear Fusion.” In a span of 13 years, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard have released 23 studio albums.
