American jam band The String Cheese Incident (SCI) was founded in 1993 and is based in Telluride and Crested Butte, Colorado. The members of the band are: Michael Travis (drums and percussion), Bill Nershi (acoustic guitar, lap steel guitar, and electric slide guitar), Kyle Hollingsworth (piano, organ, Rhodes, and accordion), Keith Moseley (bass guitar), and, since 2004, Jason Hann (auxiliary percussion). Michael Kang plays acoustic/electric mandolin, electric guitar, and violin.
In addition to rock, electronica, calypso, country, funk, jazz, Latin, progressive rock, reggae, and psychedelic sounds, their music also features elements of bluegrass. Each member sings and writes original music.

With the band's increasing prominence came the spectacle and stage show components of many of their live performances. Peak Experience Productions was brought in to enhance bigger "Incidents" like New Year's Eve and Halloween (named "Hulaween" because of the band's early involvement in the current hooping movement) with a variety of eye psychedelic effects and audience participation activities. Some examples of themed events are "Time Traveler's Ball," "Subway Ride Through New York City," "Dancing Around the Wheel of Time," and "Full Moon Dream Dance, Evolution."

In order to further enhance the cyclical energy and connection between the band and its audience, the band also started an annual summer event at Horning's Hideout in Oregon throughout the 2000s. This involved transporting Peak Experience into the woods. In order to accommodate their expanding fan base, SCI started performing in some larger venues and headlined festivals including Bonnaroo, Austin City Limits, and the Wakarusa Music and Camping Festival. At the same time, the band's fame increased and so did the sizes of the crowds who came to see them.

During their spring tour, SCI recorded 19 shows in April 2002 and published live three-CD sets of those performances. They are thought to have improved the concept in this way by taking an inspiration from Phish's Live Phish series.

Not content to stop with the spring tour, SCI has released almost all of the songs from every show from every tour to date, excluding those involving technical issues or issues with guest artists under contract. Nicknamed "On the Road," the series' episodes are available on the SCI Fidelity label for enthusiasts who lack the time or resources to participate in active tape trading.
