As the acclaimed indie-folk act explores different emotions in the making of their new record, "It does sort of feel like this umbrella effect of inadvertently sort of describing a spectrum of emotions from one symbolic image that feels almost like a mood ring," Jonathan Russell told American Songwriter.
Centering on the color blue, the album explores spectrums of emotion, as the color blue can reflect different perspectives, from the blue sky to intense ocean waves.
"The color blue to me can be like this vast, deep, almost intimidating emotion, or enveloping emotion. You think blue is like a beautiful spring day," Russell shared. "The color just sort of has the breadth of more than one mood or a situation or circumstance in my opinion."
Rooted in Seattle, The Head and the Heart was formed in 2009, consisting of members Jonathan Russell, Josiah Johnson, Charity Rose Thielen, Chris Zasche, Kenny Hensley, and Tyler Williams. Their self-titled debut album was released in 2009, and re-released in 2011 following a record deal. The album with its hit single "Lost in My Mind" took a spot in the US Billboard 200.
Following up a successful major-label debut, the band released their sophomore LP, "Let's Be Still", in 2013. The acclaimed album featured their hit singles "Shake", "Another Story", and its title track, selling over 200,000 copies in the US. With a growing fanbase and increasing support from critics, The Head and the Heart became a staple favorite amongst the indie-folk crowd.
In 2016, the band released its third album, "Signs of Light". The record debuted at #5 on the Billboard 200, producing an RIAA certified-Gold single "All We Ever Knew". This moment gave the band its big break, reaching a wider audience and receiving even greater critical acclaim. 2017 marked big milestones for The Head and the Heart as they performed at Coachella, the Red Rocks, and Lollapalooza.
From then on, the band continues to release raw and honest folk anthems that never fail to impress. Driven by passion, the Head and the Heart continues to strive as a band. "The more you can trust and feel the ability to be vulnerable as you’re making art, you make way bolder statements. You don’t guard yourself. Songwriting is its own form of therapy for all of us." Russell shared.
